Hi Nathalie

Why don’t you set up a blog (eg using www.blogger.com) so people can easily link to up-to-date information about your classes? It’s an easy way to get a free web presence without needing any web design skills.

Surely a better solution would be if Hugh carried details of these, and other local classes on the front page of this site?

At the very least Nathalie’s Cardiff class ought to be listed, but then its odd that her other classes (along with Andy’s in Newport and elsewhere) aren’t mentioned here.

Why restrict it to only Cardiff? Or only salsa for that matter?

I think restricting it to salsa makes sense - that’s what the site is called, after all, and we don’t want those poncey ballroom dancers around here - but that it would be a good idea to feature classes in Newport and the Valleys as well as Cardiff.

Thanks for that info re “blogs” tom - I’m not at all technically minded so had not heard of this - I will definitely look into it - cheers for that!
I have discussed with Hugh the matter of advertising other (ie non central, club based) salsa classes on the main listings page and Hugh has very valid reasons for not doing this - I will leave it up to Hugh to share these with you if he so wishes.
However, he has been very kind and has said he will put a link on the main listings page to my posting, so that people can go to the above posting more easily. I really appreciate this, as I feel it is important to take salsa (and also advertise it) outside of the central city and give people an opportunity to learn it in a non club/pub based environment if they so wish.
Thanks guys!
Nat

The link is up.

The reason I don’t generally list the sports-centre/community-hall classes is that the ones I have sampled have been of rather poor quality. I would feel bad about sending people to events I didn’t think were much good. If a teacher has a reputation and works at promoting him/herself in the forum (like Nathalie) I’ll do my best to help.

I don’t include Newport, Swansea etc simply because of the difficulty of keeping the listings up-to-date. As I mentioned elsewhere, promoters can be eager to have their events listed, but if they fail they don’t say a word. Accuracy is important, so I list the Cardiff events I can keep tabs on personally.

If anyone want another bite at the salsa-style/ballroom-style debate, please start a fresh thread (but keep it polite).

Fair points, Hugh, and you’re entitled to do what you like with your site. But I’d be surprised if the listings relied on you keeping tabs on all the events. I assume from regular threads about openings, closures, Christmas dates, etc that you take a lot of your information from other people here, rather than going to all the nights on a regular basis. If so, there’s no difference as to where the actual class is - if someone who uses this site knows of a change, they’ll report it.

I agree there needs to be a line drawn, but obviously have different views about where to draw it. Isn’t it odd that we have well respected teachers (like Andy and Nathalie) who have their classes in Cardiff listed, but not their classes in Newport or elsewhere. Similarly, Andy’s lambada class (in The Toad!) might have attracted a few more Cardiff salsa dancers if it had some prominence on the listings page. From their point of view the solution will be to run their own site (as Andy does), but dancers (especially potential dancers) would like to see it gathered in one place.

What is it about community hall classes that makes them poor, if the teacher runs good classes elsewhere?

I agree with Nathalie about encouraging salsa in different types of venue, and think its in all our interests to include more events and encourage more use of this site. Quite a few people travel to Cardiff to dance, so its a fair bet to suggest some might also travel in the opposite direction occasionally. Or perhaps discover that they don’t need to travel at all, because there’s a class at the end of their road.

Sorry, Lisa, I should have said ‘present company excepted’ - I certainly wouldn’t dream of describing you or your dancing as poncey. You don’t dance salsa like a ballroom dancer, and that’s intended as a compliment : )
