Hey everyone! What’s the feedback on the Club Risa salsa night then? Worth going, comments, opinions?! I went the first week and was impressed by the amount of space, though thought it was a bit dark which didn’t give it a very friendly atmosphere. Other than that I thought it had loads of potential!

Well worth going, loads of people there. Pity about the lighting though.

I gave Risa ago for the first time last week.

On the plus side, there is loads of space, enabling plenty of opportunity to practice after the classes without fear of being crowded off the dance floor like in Cuba.

With it being such a large venue, it will be great when we occasionally get to do a Rueda.

This was my first experience of a venue where the classes are run concurrently like I believe it used to be at Que Pasa before it moved to a Wednesdays. Unfortunate thing is, if you are in the circle near to another class you can’t easily here the instructions of one teacher over another.

Yes the lighting is a bit of a problem, not only is a bit dark in places, but for the first half of Kate’s class I was over near the stage where this spot light was dazzling me when trying to look towards Kate for the demonstrations in the centre of the circle. Also the floor in places was a bit sticky.

I think the Thursday class is great. Although it is a bit difficult to hear all of what the instructors are saying, visibility goes a long way. It’s easy enough to watch to see what’s being taught.

The group warm up and warm down are a lot of fun also with good variation.

Dai

I agree the warm up and warm down are good fun!

Was that the Raggaton we started with last week? Not something I had done before, but not vastly different from the other warm up routines. The sight of a row of female hips going up and down certainly helped me pick up the rhythm!

I struggled a bit with the warm down routine as I kept swinging my arms the wrong way on the cord step, however I’ve since practiced this with finger clicks to assist me on the rhythm and I think I’ve cracked it!

I think the move to Bar Risa was an excellent choice. Loads more room after class to dance and it’s making the dancing more enjoyable. Any other comments?

Dai

One thing I just happened to notice last night is that Bar Risa is of course is on the ground floor, the venue we dance in upstairs, is Jongleurs! Shouldn’t this therefore be corrected on the website? Although I suppose Jongleurs doesn’t sound very Latin, compared to Risa which is obviously more trendy and appropriate for promoting Salsa.

Wow! What a warm down last night, eight cord steps, one per beat!

Can’t wait for the Rueda next week!

Hiya! Me and my friends are looking to start a salsa calss and we thought this looked like a good one. The problem is we have no experience and we’re only 17, but we’d really really like to start a class! Does anyone know whether we’d be able to go, and if not, could someone please please help me find a class that’s suitable for us? I’d be very grateful!

Thanks!

Don’t worry. Just go along. If anyone asks you age, say you’ve come to do the class and you’ll only be drinking soft drinks. That’s perfectly legal.

More info on under-eighteens and salsa classes.

Hi B-R,

Unfortunately due to different licensing laws for different venues under 18s are not allowed in Bar Risa. We’ve already had the venue turn people away on this basis.

All the bars etc that I have dealt with have a 7pm cutoff time for those under 18s. Most venues won’t take the risk off getting caught with under age drinkers. More and more clubs in Cardiff are now checking IDs on the doors thoroughly.

However there are a few places where there are no age restrictions, we’re starting up a new night in Newport on a Sunday which has no age restrictions. Alternatively Natalie runs a class on a Friday night in a community hall in cardiff which should have no restrictions.

Or you can take Hughs advice and ignore me when I tell everyone to drink more at the bar :)
