Salsa City Forum » News and Chat » Had a great time group dancing at Que Pasa last night

Dai

Hi everyone,

Last night I decided to give Que Pasa a go for the first time, now that it has switched to Wednesdays.

The numbers were a bit disappointing as only nine of us (four girls and five guys) turned up for the improvers/intermediates, but that didn’t detract from the fun we all had.

Andy decided to combine the class into a circular group formation (sorry I can’t remember the Spanish word for this) which allowed us to continuously change partners whilst still dancing. Throughout the session Andy added more moves and called out the variations, which was a bit like what I have previously come across in a Twmpath.

Towards the end Andy substituted himself as the extra girl to make up the numbers, but us guys all breathed a huge sigh of relief when Lucy took his place for the final rotations as the last move he added was a close sensual hip wiggling move with our partners.

Thanks Andy, that was great fun, hopefully we can do that again sometime.

Hi Dai, Glad you enjoyed yourself last night. The ‘circular group formation’ is known as Rueda (wheel) and is a very popular form of Cuban salsa.

Here’s a refresher on the names of the moves we covered:
Dame uno
Dame dos
Prima (also known as Adios)
Enchulfa
Enchulfa doble
Yogu (The yogurt stirrer...)

We will be building some Rueda into our Thursday nights at Bar Risa.

Dame una = ‘give me one (woman)'
'Enchufla’, not ‘Enchulfa’ = ‘plug her in’.
Prima = 'cousin'
Yogur = too obscene to translate...

Will it be Kate teaching rueda in Bar Risa?

Andy Witt

Kate, myself and hopefully we’ll also drag Gorka up from Swansea as well. Possibly looking at a once a month Rueda/Cuban night at Bar Risa.

Thanks for the reminder of the names of the moves Andy, and the interesting translations of what they mean Tom.

Unfortunately, I generally will not always be able to make it on Thursdays as it clashes with my sporting activities, but I will try to come when you do the Rueda every month, so if you could let me and others know when that is, it would be much appreciated.

Hi there

Sorry to butt in but I am really interested in learning and would like to come to the beginner class but as you can imagine I am scared to death!!! What can I expect when I turn up? Just to soften the blow a bit as I have never danced before.

Dai

Hi their Sharon,

All beginners classes start from scratch with just a few basic steps firstly without music and then with a slow tempo track that is easy to pick up the beat.

When starting out, yes you’re bound to be nervous, but really once you’re into it, you soon begin to relax and enjoy it!

I would recommend that you start at a smaller class to begin with, Que Pasa on Wednesday would be ideal. Maybe see you there.

Hi sharon, it’s natural to be nervous, but there’s really no need - you can take every class at your own pace and salsa people tend to be very friendly and welcoming, so just try to relax and enjoy yourself!
Every class is different depending on the teacher, but all beginner classes always focus on the first steps, the cuban motion (the movement your body makes in salsa) and the rhythm.
You’d always be welcome at my classes

Any other questions, just feel free to ask!
And good luck!

Hi Sharon,

There were lots of new faces at Que Pasa last night. Were you there if so did you enjoy yourself?

janine

Hi Everyone, I’m thinking of joining on a Wednesday night at Que Pasa, I’ve danced a bit of salsa before but I was wondering if in this class you had to come with a partner, or do you dance in a circle and the ladies move on every so often which means they then have a different partner. If someone could let me know asap cause I would like to join next week. Thanks

From Janine.
