Message 1 · 10 Jan 2006 20:51 GMT Hi My girlfriend and I are looking to take up beginner’s salsa and I wanted to find out if anyone’s ever had a problem with gay couples in the sessions? She would want to take the mans role in the dance and I figure that may be a little confusing. Basically I’m looking for suggestions of a nice friendly and open class to start attending. Any ideas?? Thanks a lot Beth x |

Message 2 · 10 Jan 2006 21:57 GMT Hi beth As a salsa teacher and dancer myself, I’d see no problem with this - for a start, there are nearly always more women than men in a class so if a girl is willing to take the role of the lead, it is beneficial to everyone as it makes the numbers more even! (it is best to think of it as following and leading rather than the female and male roles.) as a female teacher, I obviously have to teach both parts but tend to teach from the lead/male perspective, as it is easier and clearer for me to structure the class this way. Your girlfriend’s idea of taking the role of the leader would however mean that she wouldn’t get a chance to learn how to follow - maybe you could take it in turns (although this could be confusing!) - but at least that way, you’d both get an insight into both roles and could then decide which you both preferred? I can’t see any classes finding this unusual, strange or confusing. For details of my classes, see the post below entitled “2006 dates for nathalie’s classes” - you’d both be more than welcome at any of these! Thanks beth All the best Nathalie |

Message 4 · 11 Jan 2006 10:44 GMT Just to add, beth, in most classes you are expected to change partners but at no point are you forced to -- if you wanted to dance with each other the whole time you could do that. However that’s very limiting, most people say they find it very useful to dance with lots of different people, you learn more that way. I’ve got no problem dancing with other females and it certainly wouldn’t be remarkable. |
