Message 5 · 2 Jan 2007 14:21 GMT HI Cerys, Where are you based? There are so many classes around to choose from. The class mentioned above at Abercynon is now run by myself as Nathalie has moved. We’ll be starting back on Monday 8th Jan at 7.15pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and give it a go as there is a beginners class followed by an Improvers class. Check out the listings on this site for details of classes in and around the Cardiff area and give it a go. It’s so much fun, a great way to meet people and a great way to stay in shape and in my case a good way to burn off those extra christmas pounds! Hopefully see you around. Lisa |

Message 6 · 28 Jan 2007 17:55 GMT Hi I am extremly overweight, 22 stones, and would love to learn how to do salsa dancing. Is it possible for someone of my size to learn? I’m about to start a diet and also want to know if this will help me. Thank you. Julie |

Message 7 · 29 Jan 2007 11:30 GMT Twenty-two stone is pretty big, almost twice my size. I don’t think it’s wise to put yourself in a position where you can be judged/rejected, which happens plenty, even in the friendliest salsa environments. Rather, think of salsa as a goal and a reward that you can start when you’ve lost a fair bit of weight. In the meantime, choose a form of exercise that doesn’t necessarily involve anyone else’s approval or cooperation. Good luck with your personal project. I hope you make it to salsa eventually in a situation where you can really enjoy it. |

Message 8 · 29 Jan 2007 12:54 GMT Hi Julie, I’m afraid I’m too stunned to respond to Hugh’s comment but would like to respond to your post. It sounds like you are trying to do exactly the right thing by combining exercise with a sensible diet. If you are trying to lose weight in a safe manner then one doesn’t really work effectively without the other, and what better type of exercise to choose than salsa! It’s great fun, easy to learn and social. You can work as hard or as basic as you want within the class structure and it’s an environment that really does see all kinds of people come together to dance and enjoy the music. Whatever age, size, sex, ability and sociability you will find them all at salsa. If you are still a bit apprehensive then put your mind at ease by speaking to the teacher before you start the class and I’m sure they will reassure you. Good luck and I hope to see you at Salsa soon. Lucy |

Message 9 · 29 Jan 2007 16:05 GMT Hi julie, Well contrary to other people’s opinons lucy is correct people come in all shapes and sizes to salsa. When I first started a few years ago my sister used to come with me who at the time was also larger than most and it not only helped her to lose weight but also kept her motivated. When you start weight loss programs it is important to start with gentle exercise and the good thing about salsa is that you can work to your own limitations. I also have friends who lost alot of weight just thro salsa and who were size 18-20 when they started, and are now a 12-14! Good on you for taking the initative. I teach in pontypridd and you are welcome to come and have a look and a chat and see if suits you. Hope this helps. Good luck. Tammi |

Message 10 · 29 Jan 2007 16:43 GMT Hi Julie, I think Tammy & Lucy are giving you good advise... All that I can offer from a male perspective is, if you should ever venture over to Bristol or see me on the (sadly) all too rare occassions I make it over to Cardiff... May I have the pleasure of the next dance. |
