Hi Salseros,

A couple of years ago I used to go over to Swansea on Friday nights to Cafe Mambo for Gorka’s classes and many times I was there they would have Birthday and Farewell dances.

These dances always had a great atmosphere, as virtually everyone would join in the circle regardless of whether it was a guy or girl in the middle who’s Birthday it was or who was leaving.

The atmosphere was generated by a rhythmical clap which I have not heard anywhere else! Back then I did’t really have much understanding of the various Latin rhythms therefore I can’t remember what this rhythm was.

Maybe some of you who know Gorka may be able to help?

PS I’m pretty sure it wasn’t simply the rhythm of the clave, it may have been off beat clave but I’m really not sure? It’s one of those things... , I’d know it if I heard it again, but can’t remember how it goes.

Whenever I’ve been to one of these it has been the clave. There are two different kind of clave (2/3 and 3/2) so it could have been the opposite one to the one you’re used to?

Altenatively it could have been a cáscara which is a more elaborate rhythm based on the the clave.
