Hi, I’ve read the site with interest, being new to the scene I would like to know who are the best to watch and dance with as I would like to improve, and if there are people good enough to do some kind of teaching course then maybe they’d be the ones to look out for. Any advice or suggestions would be great and also where are the best nights as there are so many.

Hi Al, welcome to the forum.

Luckily, the best person for you to dance with will not be the best person for someone else to dance with. That’s what makes the world go round. Dance with as many people as possible to start with, you’ll soon find whom you prefer. Watch everyone and make your own assesment of whether they are dancing well. I will give one definitive opinion and say that if a couple is taking up too much space on the dancefloor, flailing their arms, taking huge striding steps and bumping into or scaring away the other dancers: that is not good dancing.

Same with the salsa nights; they’re all different. Try out a few and see which suits you best.

I think Hugh’s right on venues, but as a guide Mondays and Thursdays are the most popular nights with dancers (as opposed to Tuesdays in Cuba, which is most popular with fag-smoking drunks). Mondays is the better venue but John’s choice in music is an acquired taste: some nights it’s fine, some nights it’s seriously dodgy. The Toad has better music in my opinion, and goes on later, but can get too crowded. Monday nights has the advantage that it only has dancers there, while Thursday gets drunks wandering around on occasions.

Asking us to nominate the best dancers is a bit invidious. In addition to Hugh’s guidelines, I’d suggest checking that people are actually dancing on the beat. One major cause of flailing arms and striding steps is when the man has no sense of rhythm so leads the woman by force.
