I thought I might help with explanations of the meaning of common phrases used on the dancefloor:

"I'm having a rest" (in response to a request for a dance)
Meaning:
"I would rather eat worms than dance with you"

"I'll dance with you later" (in response to a request for a dance)
Meaning:
"You'll have to find me first. Fortunately there are convenient pillars to hide behind in the Toad"

"Thank you" (said with emphasis, after a dance)
Meaning:
"Now f*** off and don't ask me for a dance again tonight"

"What a lot of moves you have"
Meaning:
"Shame you can't lead any of them in a form I can understand"

"X has a strong lead"
Alternative meanings:
"...he is a hamfisted oaf" or
"...that's why she is so difficult to dance with"

"Oh good, they've put a merengue track on"
Alternative meanings:
"I can't dance"
"I am an old man and this is my opportunity to get disgustingly close to a young woman"
"I am being ironic"

"I think the DJ is mixing tracks"
Meaning
"Bloody hell, I've been dancing with you for twenty minutes and if I'd realised I could have stopped after four"

Any more common phrases which need explanation?

The one I hate is, "I'm allright, thanks" (in response to a request for a dance).

I'm too polite to give my own private translation of this.

Thought I'd add one of my favourites that i like to use in response to a request for a second dance :)

"Thanks, but I think our styles are TOO different!"

Meaning,
if you think I'm that desperate to be dragged around the floor and made to look like I can't dance for a further 5 minutes, this side of Hell freezing over, then you are sadly mistaken!

Good one! Remember guys, it's bad form to try and monopolise a new partner for dance after dance (even though you fancy her like crazy) especially if she's a beginner and hasn't developed a strategy for getting away from you (like Pinky).

Good point Hugh, there are a few leches around who attempt to monopolise beginners who don't know the form. One of them is the guy who actually does inspire people to hide behind pillars in the Toad...
