Dan.
Why not try downloading some music, or even sampling some on say Amazon, before you splash out some money. Here are some selections you might want to have a listen to these are based on my favourites and as such the list is a somewhat subjective one. Some of the tracks you may not be able to Salsa to, however they give a flavour as to the Latin/ Salsa music available. Africando (tracks: Walo; Aischa 2000; Trovador), DLG (Acuyue; Juliana),Fania all Stars (Ella Fue; Micaela),Orishas (Chan Chan; C.U.B.A.),Kassav (Rete), Gypsy kings,(Baila me) Celia Cruz (Guantanamera)

I donīt have a clue who itīs from, title etc ...please help!! It was rather fast and the lyrics had alot of "yes!" in it, with short breaks in the music. I know itīs not alot to go by, but maybe somebody can help ?? Thanks !! Heather

Hi Heather

That is a tricky one. Where was the club? Was the entire lyric in English, or was it partly English and partly Spanish? Can you remember any more of the English words? Was it a male or female singer?
Heather

Hi Hugh
Actually I heard the track over here in Germany :) Iīm pretty sure the lyrics were in spanish, except for the "yes" .. I also think it it was a male singer..thanks so much for your help..

If you want to buy salsa music, not knowing which type of salsa music you prefer, be it cuban, mambo, latin jazz, etc, my advice to you would be to ask whoever is djing for the names of the tracks that you like. Them you will be equipt to order knowing the names of the tracks and artists.

Like every kind of art form it's a matter of personal taste ... we use the generic term Salsa but there are of course so many variations within that term.

I know how difficult it can be to first understand what type of Salsa it is that you like and then, to find / source what your looking for. I agree with one of the previous post that a lot of what is on sale at the usual commercial outlets is tosh.

There is clearly a lot of good advise in the previous posts worth reading them all I'd say. I would agree also that initially a compilation CD is the best way to start to gain knowledge about the music, though if I were you I would ask advise about a well known compilation from someone who has been on the scene longer and who shares a similar view as you, as to what is good sounding Salsa.

At Fiesta Havana (Wednesday & Friday) We play a varied selection of Salsa covering most, if not all the variations ...
we cover all of the Countries that produce Salsa and play Salsa from the Younger Funkier Artists to the Older more Traditional.

I am always happy to give anyone the information they need about a particular band or track so they can buy it and also the place/s where they can source it.

So please don't be afraid to come and ask if you're in the Club !!!
