Hi Rach

Most of the salsa classes in Cardiff are held in bars but I think you'd be ok if you stick to soft drinks and/or go with someone who's older.

La Tasca in the Old Brewerey Quarter (Wednesdays) is a restaurant so you wouldn't have any problem there.

I'd be interested to hear from some teachers about their policy on under-eighteen dancers in their classes because there have been a few enquiries on the board and by email to me.

Update: please see this thread.

Hi Hugh and Rach,

General licencing rules apply in all bars/clubs/pubs in Cardiff as far as I'm aware, so no under 18s. I know of one or two people who do sneak in under age, but it's not really wise.

La Tasca :) is definately an 'any age' welcome venue though as it's technically a restaurant.

I've taught a handful of children and teenagers already who have been there with their relatives. So I'm happy enough for anyone of any age to come along and perhaps it might be a little less daunting for people to know that I'm only 21 and so you certainly won't be out of place!!

I'll look forward to seeing a few more new and younger faces, as the more the merrier!!

Not to mention, Ladies we are always over-run with Men!!

Possibly this is the only venue that this has happened to and I try to keep them all interested with my goodlooks and charm, but sarcasm aside, if any beginner/improver Ladies are fed up with waiting for a man in other classes then you'll have no problem in La Tasca. So please, please, please come along!!!

Hello! I've a shoe question! I've got an ancient pair of trainers and some steel toe-capped clodhoppers. Obviously I don't want to be buying shoes specifically till I've been a few times, so which do you think would be best for a first night?
Thanks!

Just pull out you credit card and get yourself a decent pair of shoes, Jonathan! It might change your life. Both your current options sound nasty, and I can't, in good conscience, recommend either of them. The trainers might lead to damage to you, and the clodhoppers might lead to damage to your partners.

Hi! I've been desperate to learn salsa for ages & ages but have been putting it off as my nagging friends to come hasn't worked and I don't want to look 'pathetic' arriving at a salsa club on my own... HOWEVER on looking through your forum I'm much more confident in joining 'alone'. Judging by all these messages your a friendly bunch!!! My only dilemna now is which club in Cardiff to start at!!! Hopefully I'll see some of you about very soon! x

Hi G

I'm very pleased we've helped calm your fears. You should try a couple of different classes if you can; they're all different and some may suit you better than others.

I teach salsa and truly believe that as long as you can walk you can dance salsa. You may not ever become a professional but the dance and music can be enjoyed by all. I have taught guys with one arm and people who thought they would never master the rhythm; half the fun is in the learning messing up and trying again. I wish you luck and happy dancing.

Hiya,
I'm planning on joining a salsa class for beginners. I'm thinking wed 5th Jan 05 at La Tasca and definetly mon 10th at O'Neill's. I can 'move' but don't yet know 'the moves' if you know what I mean ;)
Will those classes be a good place to start?

All suggestions welcome.
Thanks guys
Kx

Hi Katreen

All the Cardiff salsa classes have something going for them but it's a matter of personal taste which teachers you will find most sympathetic and easiest to learn with; aim to try out as many as you can. I have a feeling the classes will be very busy in January with people trying to get fit after Christmas so don't be put off if they're a bit crowded, things will probably calm down after a few weeks.

If you already feel at home on the dancefloor it probably won't take you long to pick up enough salsa to start having fun. Let us know how you get on.
